Pottery for beginners · Ruzafa, Valencia

Put the phone down.
Get your hands in clay.

Two calm hours at the potter’s wheel with Marta, in a small studio in Ruzafa. You make two pieces; she glazes and fires them. Three weeks later you take home something real that you made yourself.

  • Never touched clay? Most students hadn’t.
  • Coming alone? Most people do.
  • Six people per class, at most.

“I just needed two hours without my phone.”

The question everyone asks

“I’ve never touched clay. Will I be terrible?”

No. Most people who sit at Marta’s wheel have never done it before — and nobody fails a cylinder in her class.

With six people at most, her hands are on your clay whenever you need them. You don’t need to be “creative”. You need two hours, and clothes that can get dirty.

Come alone
Most people do. You’ll be at the wheel next to five others doing exactly the same thing.
Bring nothing
Clay, tools and aprons are here. Short nails help.
Leave the phone
Your hands will be too muddy to check it anyway.

Who teaches you

“After eight years as a graphic designer, I needed to make things that exist.”

Marta Ferrer trained as a ceramicist at the Escola d’Art i Superior de Ceràmica de Manises, in the ceramics town next door to Valencia. In 2019 she opened Taller Brasa in an old carpentry workshop in Ruzafa, and has since taught about 1,400 people their first cylinder.

Brasa means embers: the glow inside the kiln, and the warmth people carry home with their pieces.

Honestly

Is this for you?

Come if…

  • You spend all day on screens and want to make something with your hands that isn’t a spreadsheet.
  • You’re looking for a gift that isn’t another object — a class for two, say.
  • You’re in Valencia for a few months and want a weekly ritual, and to meet people.

It’s probably not for you if…

  • You’re booking for children under 14 — there are no kids’ classes.
  • You want a quick one-hour photo session. This is two real hours of making.
  • You’re an experienced potter looking only for kiln rental.

Before you ask

The questions people send on Instagram.

Anything else? Message Marta on WhatsApp.

I’ve never done it. Will I manage?

Yes. Most students are complete first-timers, and nobody fails a cylinder in Marta’s class. With six people at most, she has time for everyone’s clay.

“I’m not creative.” Is that a problem?

No. The wheel is about touch and patience, not ideas. Marta shows you each movement, then guides your hands until you feel it yourself. The result is yours, wobbles included — students tend to love those most.

Can I come alone?

Yes — most people do.

What should I wear?

Clothes that can get dirty. Aprons are provided. Short nails help.

When can I take my pieces home?

After three weeks, once Marta has glazed and fired them. Collect them at the studio, or she ships within Spain for €8.

What if I can’t make it?

Cancel for free up to 48 hours before. After that, you can move to another date once.

Is there an age limit?

Classes are for ages 14 and up.

Can I book for a group or a team event?

Yes, up to 6 people. Message Marta on WhatsApp with your dates.

Is the studio accessible?

There is one step at the entrance. Tell Marta in advance and she’ll make sure everything is ready for you.

How do gift vouchers work?

Choose a taster class (€35) or the course (€160). You get the voucher as a PDF by email; it’s valid for six months and the person you give it to picks their date.
